As a native English speaker, and as a second-generation linguist, Douglas is diligent in researching the Bugis language and promises to continue to improve the dictionary. All languages are precious and our efforts to preserve them are essential. Hopefully this dictionary will be useful both for non-Bugis people who want to learn Bugis, as well as for Bugis people who want to master their own language better, or see English or Indonesian translations of Bugis words. The Bugis tribe is the most widely spoken tribe in eastern Indonesia. It is unclear how many Bugis speakers there are now. There are estimates of three million, some say five million, some even estimate ten million. The Bugis people have a unique culture, customs, and language, which is a very valuable manā (heritage) from generation to generation.
